Did you know that fantasy baseball was the first fantasy sport to be played? It started in the 1970s, with a very simple format that looks nothing like fantasy baseball the way it is today. Keep in mind that the computer barely existed, so entering the stats and points all had to happen manually. That’s why it’s easy to understand why the first version of fantasy baseball had to be very simple. In this MLB draft guide, we’ll explain to you all about it.

Point system

The advancement of computer and the internet helped allow for a more sophisticated system with a lot of rules, point systems and ways to keep track of scoring. In the text below you find the most essential MLB draft guide. Tips on who to pick first, type of players to avoid and other information.
Like any other fantasy sport, fantasy baseball revolves around your ability to spot and draft the players who will statistically perform the best. The purpose? Gain praise in your office and earn some dollars! You can choose to play in a season-long contest or daily/weekly competitions. Most tips below apply to either format.

The first draft guide tip is to do your research. If you’re a baseball fan and watch a lot, don’t count on that knowledge only. You might understand the strengths and weaknesses of a player well, but statistically assessing how many points they will score for you is a different story. Grab a cheat sheet and assess who would be a risk to pick and who is more solid.

Draft type

In a timed draft, you only have limited time to choose your next player. Although gut picks can sometimes turn out favorably, you’ll want to be prepared. That’s why you should know whether you are in a timed draft or an untimed one. Either how having a good idea of your next move with a cheat sheet is a great idea. A cheat sheet, depending on the source, is usually made by experts based on stats. It covers the predicted returns of a player and showcases who is a risky pick and who is the most solid. Although a cheat sheet could be a good help, it’s better to first make your own list. Then you can later evaluate whether you were right and adjust accordingly.

In fantasy baseball, you collect points per player in different categories. Most baseball leagues have 2 main categories: hitting and pitching, which each consist of 5 categories. There are some leagues that add an extra 2 categories. It’s important to understand how this might affect your player’s performance. After all, it’s about the number of points they can contribute to each category and you want to have this as optimized as possible.

Safe picks

It’s key to emphasis on safe picks in the first few rounds of the MLB draft guide. This goes against the age-old saying you gotta risk it to get the biscuit, but it’s true. That is not to say that there is no space for (calculated) risks. But baseball is a profoundly strategic sport, therefore risks don’t have as much as place as it would in other fantasy sports. Avoid all players prone to injury or the ones that haven’t yet proven themselves. This might seem boring, but making solid choices really gets you the best chances to win.

Somewhere down the line in the draft, you’ll choose some sleepers. Those are the highly risky players who you don’t know you’ll ever have use off, but they are part of the game nevertheless. Some people prefer to not use the words sleepers ‘there is no such thing’, but that’s simply not true. Yes, somewhere down the line they might come in well strategically. But their overall question marks don’t make them a solid choice for the line-up. They’re good to have because their purchase cost is generally lower than many other players. That’s why if they perform well you can make a nice profit off it. which is the whole point of participating in a league!

Top pitchers

You should use the first couple of rounds to draft two-star pitchers. That will be the solid foundation of your team. Although this is probably a strategically straight forward choice, many people are tempted to focus on picking their favorite players. Although there is something to say for a different type of order, generally this is the most successful one.
