NHL Hockey is the 4th popular sport in the United States. If you’ve ever watched a live hockey game, it’s easy to understand why people love it. It’s fun, action-packed, entertaining and fast. Watching the game in a stadium has an atmosphere unlike any other, which makes betting on the outcome even more appealing. Aside from betting on score and outcome, there are also plenty of so-called prop bets. For example about the number of fouls that will be made. Although there are more hockey leagues than just the NHL, it’s by far the most popular one worldwide.

What is the NHL?

The NHL is a professional hockey league that has a total of 31 teams. Some of these are from Canada, others from the United States. The season lasts roughly 6 months from October to April during which each team plays 82 games. The highlight of the season is the Stanley Cup, which the winner of the season will get. The NHL came into existence in 1917 in Canada and have since grown a lot. Nowadays the league has all the most talented players from all over the world. In fact, they now have players from around 20 different countries. Most of the players are from Canada and the US, but there’s also quite a number of players from Europe.

Advantages of betting on hockey

Sportsbooks are smart. They don’t just leave their odds up for grabs making it easy for you to find value bets. Especially for sports like football, it’s sometimes hard to find a bet with some value. For hockey, it’s a little easier. Because sportsbooks, however, don’t nearly spend as much time crafting the hockey odds as they do for the NFL. So, in that sense betting on the NHL has a significant advantage in comparison to other sports.

Types of bets

Before you start betting on the NHL, it’s important that you understand how the bets work. First of all, you should know that the most common bet in hockey is the Moneyline, but there is also the so-called puck line wagering or total goals. Below you find a short explanation of each of the important bets.

The Moneyline

In hockey and baseball, the Moneyline is the most important type of bet. That’s because both of these sports have how lower-scoring than for example football. The money line works simple but is versatile in the sense that also betting on the underdog can result in a win. That’s because the sportsbook will ahead of the match present the odds of each team winning. The team most likely to win is called the ‘favorite’ and when placing a Moneyline bet, you can spot the favorite with a minus (-) sign next to its name. The underdog has a plus (+) sign, which means they’re expected to lose.

Puck line

The puck line is also called a spread bet. When you make a spread bet, the team that you bet on to win must cover the goal spread. That means your team must win a higher number of points than the other team.

Betting totals

Thirdly, there are the betting totals bet. This is perhaps the easiest type of bet to explain. When you bet on totals you bet on the total amount of goals scored during a game. Usually, sportsbooks will present a number range and if you want to place a bet you have to bet on whether the outcome will be over or under the number range. What’s confusing about sports bets is that bets often go by different names. For example, betting totals is also called over/under bets.
